A Hybrid Methodology of Rock Support Design for Poor Ground Conditions in Hard Rock Tunnelling

چکیده

Abstract The design of rock support in hard tunnelling is often assisted by the use empirical engineering mass classification systems. This has involved a wide variety geological- and mechanical-conditions, including poor ground conditions like fault zones weak rocks. For most encountered situations, designs have performed well. However, systems pose several limitations to describe behavior derive optimal as discussed publications during last decades. In present study, an analysis 118 case records, mostly from monitored Norwegian tunnel sites, been undertaken investigate performance current practice with Q-system when exposed conditions. results revealed significant improvement possibilities which relate Among others, rocks, anisotropic rock, transition self-bearing masses requiring load-bearing tunnel, typically quality Q < 1. As result, set improvements recommendations developed integrated or hybrid methodology specific for proposed. approach combines main components advantages different methodologies provides guidance optimization where presents limitations.

Pillar Design in the Hard Rock Mines of South Africa

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with the design of hard rock pillars in South African mines. Recent examples of large scale pillar collapses in South Africa suggest that these were caused by weak partings which traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods are used to determine the strength of pillars, namely, empirical equations derived from back analyses o...

A Comparison of Underground Opening Support Design Methods in Jointed Rock Mass (TECHNICAL NOTE)

It is of great importance to consider long-term stability of rock mass around the openings of underground structure, during design, construction and operation of the said structures in rock. In this context, three methods namely, empirical, analytical and numerical have been applied to design and analyze the stability of underground infrastructure at the Siah Bisheh Pumping Storage Hydro-Electr...

Engineering geological studies used for redesigning and employing a hard rock TBM in soft rock formations of Chamshir water conveyance tunnel

The Chamshir water conveyance tunnel (CWCT) with a length of 7.4 km and boring diameter of 5.3 m is excavated using a refurbished single shield TBM, initially designed to work in hard rock formations. This study focuses on engineering geological issues, which are important for checking the suitability of this machine and proposing required modifications for improving its performance in soft roc...
